Rare Antique Mappin & Webb "The Cabinet" Liquor Tantalus, Marquetry Inlay & 3 Cut Crystal Decanters
Absolutely gorgeous & rare antique Victorian to Edwardian era English Mappin & Webb marked 14" liquor tantalus, an exceptional marquetry inlaid walnut & silver plate caddy or casing with working lock & key, slide-out base and three beautiful original wheel cut crystal decanters! The label on the back of the tantalus reads "The Cabinet, Rd No 6299, Mappin & Webb", the Mappin and Webb registration number 6299 dates to 1880. Magnificent visual appeal on this one, most of these fine old Victorian era liquor stands are far less attractive and common. I've only seen one other with this style of inlay. The three Hobnail cut crystal decanters are original but, unfortunately, one has a crack encircling the base (see pictures for full details). That said, this type of decanter is one of the more popular styles and hence would be easier to find a replacement if you wish to. The cracked on will still hold fluid but is flawed as noted. The walnut caddy is beautifully inlaid with extensive scrolled foliate tendrils & flowers with the sides having matching urn shaped inlays. Gorgeous! It has a fixed silver-plate handle, so it is opened via a forward sliding mechanism which opens by pressing the key into the spring loaded lock and turning it clockwise. Once this is done the front and decanters will slide forward like a drawer allowing the decanters to be lifted out. Working lock with key also and there are two silver plated banner shaped decanter labels, one for Sherry and the other Cognac. Marvelous visual & decorative appeal, whether you choose to use or simply display! Rare, don't miss it!
Very good condition. As noted above, one decanter has a crack encircling the base, it also has a chipped rim and chips to the inside tip of the stopper. The other two decanters may have a tiny nip or two but no other notable damage. The caddy or tantalus itself is in great shape. No loss, wear or bubbling to the thick silver-plating, no veneer damage or inlay loss. As noted, the lock & key work just fine (the actual lock mechanism is marked "Bramah Secure"). The tantalus and decanters have a total weight of 11 lbs 6 oz (5.2 kg). See pictures for all measurements.
