You'll have to decide whether to trim one handle a little shorter to match the one missing it's end, but otherwise, this pair of beautiful c.1840s face screens are in very good to excellent condition for age and type. They do not have big chips, no breaks apart from that tip of one handle (visible in our images) and will be wonderful for display in frame, or just hanging or resting near your fireplace.
The old face screens were a must for any Victorian home, and were offered to guests to use to shield their faces from the heat as company gathered around a big fireplace to warm themselves of an evening's socializing. The intense heat from a big open fireplace would, otherwise, mottle and pink the lovely white complexion or perhaps even melt the makeup of the time, which was often wax based. They survive only rarely in they original pairs, but this set are definitely the original mates.
You'll find a little roughness perhaps on outer rim, more to the fingertip that to the eye. The scallop form and the hand painted gold Oriental theme figures are all just wonderful. Measurements are noted on the photos.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
