Fabulous antique Victorian era Black Forest hand carved walnut or mahogany hardwood 29 1/4" wall barometer, very attractive with "Fruits of the Hunt" motif including a trophy style wild boar's head mount & game birds among an array of pierced or reticulated vines & foliage! Wonderful decorative accents, these fine old Black Forest barometers always bring an undeniable charm with them. This one rather unique in that it was carved from hardwood rather than the softer, lighter Linden wood which was most common in Black Forest carvings. The back panel is solid, the barometer mount and figures carved & applied to that rear panel. The back of the barometer mechanism is marked “PHNB” for Pertuis Hulot & Naudet Barometres, Paris. The firm of Pertuis Hulot & Naudet Barometres, was pre-eminent in the manufacture of the aneroid barometers during the 2nd to 3rd quarter of the 19th Century. The barometer face itself is card and the text is in French, likely a Swiss Alps work though the face is marked for a French retailer "J.E. Fasse Optician, 12 Rue de l'Hotel-de-Ville, Lyon". Also noteworthy is that superb coiled or spiraled thermometer mounted on a silvered brass plaque, I just love that style! One of several wonderful antique wall barometers that we're listing this week, I guess the changing of the weather has me fixated on these aesthetic decorative instruments :). Be sure to browse some while you're with us. Thanks!
Very good condition. A small nip or two possible but no large chips, no splits, cracks, damage or repairs to the wood case. Original beveled glass on the barometer has been replaced. Original silvered brass plaque and spiraled thermometer. Everything appears intact and in working order but we've not tested it for accuracy. Heavy, the piece weighs 6 lbs (2.7 kg).
