One of the most beautiful old paintings ever, in miniature, of a French Empire influenced scene, 2 angels and a lamb out in the landscape, a monument supporting the one. Flower garlands in their hair and as a lead for the lamb. Not certain if it's a metaphor, or just the portrait of someone's beloved children of the French Empire era, c. 1790-1810. The painting is done on heavy card, from the look of it. No grain. I haven't taken it apart to look on back, or to see if the outer border might reveal a signature. The old 18k gold frame around the glass-covered painting is in relatively rough condition, but it is 18k gold. I hesitate to try to pry the top off to look for signature, you'll understand why I'll leave that to the next owner. A beauty, isn't it.
Measurement: 3.25" diameter and .75" high when closed.
Very good condition for age and type. This is a paper ache outer snuff box, lined as was typical, and that bottom lining that rises and forms the lip upon which the box top rests has a section of chips. I've marked it with "x" so you won't miss it in our images. Doesn't show when closed, but we wanted to point it out. The painting is remarkably vibrant, lovely. Done in gouache on vellum, we think, or perhaps card, it is well protected under glass and while there is some damage to the gold frame, it is 18k (acid tested). Fabulous old treasure!
