A beautiful and extra large mid-1800s table box, probably a trousseau chest in its time, but a fabulous table box or one to refit the interior to house your fabulous French sterling silver flatware, perhaps. The size is about right for 2 layers. Fine quality, from one of the best cabinetry (ebeniste) houses of 19th century France, though signature on the lock plate to tell us which of them - quality equal to TAHAN, Vervelle, Giroux. Look at the piano hinge, the recessing side braces. The fabulous engraved and inlaid brass boulle work that decorates it. The interior is a rich hardwood, glowing. You'll be unsure whether to display open or closed. Perfect for use as a document box, without the silk lining so many of these have. Working lock and the original key. Wow! BIG beauty!
Measurement: 13.5" long, 9.5" wide, 4.75" high when closed.
Very good condition for age and type. The box shows beautifully in spite of its 165 or so years (give or take 10). All of the elaborately worked brass is in place, none lost. The hardware is exceptionally fine, and includes the working lock and original key. The old wood interior is stunningly beautiful, no damage, no odors, no flaws to note. The only thing I can point out on this one is that there are some slight irregularities to the veneer on the top panel, shows up as slightly uneven and a few tight hairline cracks. My guess is it might have gotten rained on at one point at some street antiques market, and not properly dried so the veneer expanded slightly. Look our photos over to see what I mean. A little more noticeable on a certain angle and we tried to capture it for your review. A fabulous box, extra large and finest quality maker's artistry. Napoleon III era, or early to mid Victorian - the height of popularity for these awesome French boxes.
