Gorgeous antique French Belle Epoque era 12pc 7.5" entremet, dessert or fruit knife set: hallmarked 18k gold "vermeil" on nearly sterling solid silver blades with solid shimmering mother of pearl handles and original opulent fitted storage and/or presentation box! The combination of the hallmarked French vermeil and cool, heavy mother of pearl is superb, tres chic, non? I've always loved mother of pearl incorporated into these fine old French flatware pieces and this set is truly superb! Ornate likely sterling silver caps & collars but they're not hallmarked (common in the smaller pieces), also richly gilded....the pieces are virtually dripping gold. All blades bear the French Minerve or Minerva marking, 2nd tier designating at least .800 silver content (so they're just under the the .925 standard for sterling silver). The lowered silver content is also quite common in knife blades as it adds strength and durability to the metal (sterling bends easier). Silversmith marks are for Edouard Ernie, Paris from 1882. The inside of the box has a gold embossed stamp that reads "Gaudin, Monte Carle & Bagneres De Luchon". Just as decadent and French as can be! Don't miss them!
Excellent condition. No loss or wear that I can see to the vermeil gold plating. No chips, breaks, damage or repairs to the pearl handles or blades. The box has a slight warp to the bottom half, visible from the sides. It is also missing part of both clasps so that side will not close securely. See pictures for weights and all measurements.
