Fabulous antique Victorian era Black Forest style 15 3/4” figural cornice or architectural carving, a signed plaque of whippet looking dog figure in solid hand carved European oak! Fantastic! We love the Black Forest carvings, as you know if you follow us. Everything from superb huge 'Fruits of the Hunt' wall plaques and masterful huge clocks to jewelry boxes, tantalus, and the pair of carved wall panels offered here would flank one of those wonderful antler mounts or a clock or game plaque. This piece similar in style to the carved cornices or finials that would top a piece of furniture though there are no signs that it was ever mounted or used as such other than the small screw holes in the base. Signed “JM Sorin” in the lower right corner so it must simply be a stand alone work and what a marvelous one at that! A large dog figure, somewhat crouched as if on the trail of its prey...and hopefully it catches something, judging from those protruding ribs :). Heavy, solid old growth oak, not common with Black Forest pieces so we’re thinking it must be of English or French origins. A marvelous decorative accent, incorporate it into a custom bar or piece of furniture OR, just display it as the marvelous sculpture it is.
Very good-excellent condition. No chips, breaks or repairs that I can see, even to the tail. See pictures for all measurements.
