This is made like the traditional bedroom table libation service, or "bonne nuit" as the French call them, but would have had an upturned matching tumbler resting over the stopper, lip down. The one shown here, if it was once of that type, is missing the tumbler, but is a wonderful decanter for table wine for one or two persons, or to be used for bath oils in a well-appointed master bath, perhaps. You'll know the perfect spot for it, even if it's just in your lighted display case alongside other opaline treasures. This one is definitely French, hand decorated with kiln-fired enamels which have stood the test of time very well. Jeweled with red dots against that blue band, it's got a little bit of an Etruscan feel to it, hasn't it.
Very good to excellent for age and type. There is one tiny chip on the rim of the platter, or tray. Slight rubs to the enamels here or there. And complete in the 3 pieces you see, no tumbler or really evidence of one, so we think it is complete as shown. Fine old French opaline glass. A beauty! Measurements are noted on our photos.
