A very rare offering, this late 1700s hand carved figure of Christ in wood, 11" head to toe, and mounted on the old original 28.5" tall altar cross in stand, exquisitely preserved with only a few missing fingertips to show for more than 200-250 years of devout worshipful awe inspiring presence in some elegant private home, or some church in France or Europe. It is veneered in faux shell, (we know it's faux owing to the extra large panels). The base and cross are a stunning presentation for this opulent figure. Our photos show the superb anatomical detail of a suffering Christ figure. There are a number of typical poses for these old figures of Christ, each representing a different point in the Christ story. Some show a pleading Christ at the point when he asks "Why hast thou forsaken me?" and others show a relaxed spent Christ whose head is downcast and in acceptance of his impending death. This one is one that shows the beginning of the trial on cross. His muscles are taught, well defined, showing the intensity of pain but not yet giving in to it. A superb work of art!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The only flaws to note are the missing fingers. Everything else is really quite fabulous for its age. Raised on ebonized-finish bun feet, the plinth is also just beautiful. The cross comes free from the base just below the first widened part, so it will be simpler to ship without incurring damage. You know we're world famous for our packing of these fine old treasures, too. Large, impressive, RARE. You will see this quality and age in the collection at the Vatican. I've seen them myself numerous times. We really do sell museum quality antiques. Don't miss this offering.
