This is one of the few items we've got to offer that are not antique. We have many wonderful antique gaming boxes, most of French origin, but we also love the marble marquetry work (pietra dura) souvenirs from Italy and this one is mid-century (1950s) we think, certainly a fine one and vintage suits it. The box is made to hold 2 decks of standard playing cards (those shown are only for ambiance and size reference, will not be included). The outer box is leather clad and embossed in gold. A nice hunter green color to the leather and the condition is excellent. The box is wood, as you can see, and the heavy inset of hand-sawn marble marquetry includes exotic stone samples in the work, too. This is a relatively modern rendition of a very old and extremely valuable mid-1800s cards and chips box/chest that we've seen a few times and owned only once. That type is large, dore bronze or heavy brass with exceptionally fine gaming pietra dura plaque on top. Alas, so few of those and yet the kind of craftsmanship we love.
Very good to excellent for age and type, this c.1950s "vintage" cards box for bridge or whist, or poker, will stand you well among your friends come cards night. No odors, no stains, no rips or breaks to note. Photos show it in fine detail
