This exceptional old devotional carving, very aged and dating to 1600s, comes to us from France and a collection there. The figure is identified as Christ, though I'm not entirely positive, it seems likely. The carving is made from a split log, you can see from the bottom how the log was cut, sawn. The sculpture stands upright for display or can be hung by addition of a loop or hanging wire, bracket. This very old wood carving has substantial and very old wood worm damage which really just makes it more interesting. There is no active infestation, but look it over to see the evidence of centuries, and of infestation. It was probably a carving set into very old carved nave or perhaps the monk's seating panels. A spectacular work of art over 400 years old. We're pleased to offer it.
Very good for age, you can see that the 400 year old figure is entirely carved from a split log, sawn at top and bottom. Carved in deep bas relief, Christ almost walks out of the wood. The old wood has very old damage from wood worm, as you can see in our images. There is not any active infestation, however, and it is not spongy. Will be around for another 400 years, no doubt, gaining value all the time. Your chance to own a museum piece.
