A spectacular old mid-1800s Black Forest treasure, this! The upright cabinet or chest is entirely hand carved, hand made, and is complete with all 4 drawers within the hinged and lockable outer door. Each drawer front is carved, as is the entire outside of the chest. And up top, a beautifully carved fox with his foot in a trap. This is a theme we've seen before in other pieces, and in fact we've got a similar upright chest with similarly carved fox and trap, and also an inkwell or desk stand in the same theme. It must have been a popular carving. Perhaps all by the same carver. The chest is not signed, however, so we can only point to the exquisite detail in the carvings, the similarities. This one has the original and working key, so whatever you might chose to store inside can be safely locked away. Photos show it well. It's a beauty!
Very good to excellent for age and type, the only flaw to note is a broken tip on the foliage, visible in our photos. The fox and other carving is all intact right down to the knobs on the 4 drawers. There are some old woodworm holes, probably a half-century old, primarily showing on the side panels, take a close look at our images. No current infestation, of course. Superb carving and anatomical detail on the fox, as well.
