Absolutely exquisite antique French Napoleon III era 13" ecritoire, writer's box or 'lap desk' with elegant undulating or serpentine shape and extensive tumbling blocks style marquetry inlay! Isn't this one gorgeous! Not only is the size impressive but you really can't beat the condition! Over 100 years old though you'd never guess from looking at the lustrous finish and state of the intricate inlay! A beautiful old table box, perfect to use as a desk or writing table top decorative piece OR...I love rotating these around my coffee table, change them around every now & then and it's a never ending array of stunning old French masterpieces....and conversation pieces :). No maker's marks that I can see but I would not be surprised if it were Tahan, Vervelle or Diehl...all renowned French ebenistes.
Very good-excellent condition. Just as you see it! The exterior is nearly pristine with just a missing veneer piece along the right side of the lid (the vertical edge of the lid panel). The interior does show its age with some ink staining and a split in the hinged area of the velvet writing surface. The inkwells that would have fit into the outer compartments are missing, as is any shaped pen or writing implement tray that would have rested on the center space. The interior compartment is 11 3/4" x 8 7/8". See pictures for measurements.
