For sale is an absolutely outstanding antique inlaid marquetry box that I acquired at a vintage store in Boise, Idaho. It is made in the form of a book, and is completely inlaid on all sides including the bottom, back, and the inside of the lid. Both geometric and leaf designs have been incorporated, and on the top is the word "Hope". I don't know if that is a sentiment, or the name of who the box was made for. On the interior of the lid there are remnants of a velvet heart with "1885-86" done in what I think is gold mohair. The box is lined with dark red velvet trimmed with the same gold mohair, and the words "HAPPY NEW YEAR", have been added, again using the gold mohair. There is a diamond shaped escutcheon with engraved details on the front, and parts of a locking mechanism. There are also 6 brass tacks on the bottom, presumably so that the inlaid design won't be easily damaged. The box measures about 9" long, 7 3/4" wide, and 3" tall, and is in very nice antique condition, with wonderful indications of age, but no missing inlay. Please look carefully at the pictures as they are an important part of the description, and be sure to ask any questions. What a terrific addition to your box collection!
