"In Peace a Glorious Asset, In War a Tower of Strength", the guiding Motto of every cadet since the VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE began in the year 1839 as the first public Senior Military College in the United States, located in Lexington, Virginia.
In keeping with its founding principles, VMI enrolls cadets only and awards baccalaureate degrees as cadets live by the strict military discipline of the school , combined with a physically and academically demanding environment. The once ALL-MALE military school opened its enrollment to women in 1997, and ever since the "RAT MASS" (the endearing term of the cadet!) & "RAT LINE" have been gloriously Co-Ed!!
This VMI first class private Cadet Parade Coatee is most-likely from the 1930's or 40's, as judging by the lining---the material and the method of its stitching. The heavy, double-layered blue wool material is in EXCELLENT Vintage Condition, with on a couple of very small 'holes' on the back; all of the black and gold 'roping' on the breast, the collar, the coattails and the sleeves are all intact, perfect condition. The 44 goldtone buttons, are as well, still in tact and firmly attached, with their famous motto, "Sic Semper Tyrannis" (Thus Always to Tyrants).
The jacket is APPROXIMATELY sized 38" chest
26" sleeve length,
30.5" length, from shoulder to tip of tails
18-1/2" length from shoulder to bottom of jacket in front
Typical VINTAGE/ANTIQUE Condition and wear.
