Elk Badge Hand Carved, Mother of Pearl and Silver, C.1890-1920. This unique badge is finely crafted using the best materials and an incredibly handsome design. Even the shape of the framework and silver mounting are well planned and executed.
The Elk, which is the main focal point of this badge, is made of a natural material, perhaps Elk antler bone. It’s nicely carved with mouth open as if in call. There’s some detailed textured fur along the neck, simulated muscles and nicely shaped back legs. Almost overpowering the body of this fine animal is the Elk’s beautiful antlers. His magnificent rack is his show of strength and virility.
Although the Elk is the main focal point there is no way to ignore the exquisitely carved Mother of Pearl background scenery. On the right is an incredible arching tree with finely detailed bark, branches, foliage and even a knothole. Additional carved texture behind the animal simulates ground foliage. This all takes place on an oval Mother of Pearl medallion.
The medallion is set into a shaped frame made of what appears to be the same bone material as the carved Elk figure. That in turn is mounted in silver with European hallmarks indicating precious metal. Finally, the back is finished with black vintage fabric that is original to the piece.
SIZE: 2 ¼” high; 1 5/8” wide.
MARKS: European hallmark for quality silver, initials of maker – appears to be BT or RT.
CONDITION: Very Good! Uncleaned and unpolished condition. There is one very tiny hole in the black fabric backing. The red ribbon appears to be a later addition. That’s the way it came to me so I have left it as found.
