There is definitely a story here. Is the beautiful woman in the foreground a shopper or a seller? She seems to know she's the focal point of the artist. Does she know him? Where is this place? Poland? Ukraine? Is the setting Greece or Syria? It's anyone's guess. I look at the woman's scarf and I think Eastern European. There is writing on a sign in the painting, just over her head, but I can't make it out. Is it the artist's signature? Or just part of the painting?
Whatever the story here, the details are endless. Many stories are in this painting, which I date to about the 1930s just going by the paper in the back and the frame. This is painted on a board, not canvas. I'm no art critic, but I think this is done so well. Surely, it's difficult to paint such details on such a small space. I've never tried, but I think it would have to be.
Our subject--the dear lady--is lovely and sweet looking and seems to be enjoying her day. The painting and frame 7.5" long by 6" wide. The painting alone is 6" x 4 3/4". Thank you for stopping by.
