WHY YOU WANT THIS HOUSE…All the Mystery Houses made for FAO Schwarz in the 1890's are rare. Indeed, they are few and far between…but you should have this one because it is a very rare small and manageable size at 28” tall, 22” across, and 11” deep. Normally these houses are twice as large ! You may not consider yourself a doll house collector - but think of how many of your small dolls and all bisques could live in the luxury they deserve ! What better ‘cabinet' could there be?
THE LEGENDARY F.A.O. SCHWARZ…For over one hundred and fifty years, the legendary toy store, F.A.O. Schwarz, was celebrated for its exclusive dolls, dollhouses and toys especially designed for FAO alone. Much like Au Nain Bleu in Paris, and of the same time period, FAO had an exclusive clientele that expected to find only the very best of the best when they visited the famed emporium at its headquarters on Fifth Avenue. They were never disappointed - especially at Christmas !
THE MYSTERY HOUSE ca 1890…It is a beloved mystery in the doll world as to who made this splendid structure exclusively for Schwarz. They were neither signed nor labeled by the maker, nor identified in catalogs, as to who provided several variations of the same house in a few sizes over a short period of time. All the houses are characterized by unique exterior notched trim and fretwork window frames and doorways. There are 18 glass windows in all. Of special interest are the 4 glass windows on each side of the mansion allowing for wonderful views of the interior.
There are 2 more glass windows at each end of the spacious third floor attic that is accessed via a hinged glass dormer in the roof.
The interior of this pristine four room mansion is striking with its big square rooms and 9” ceilings perfect for chandeliers. The floors are like no other doll house. They are a combination of inlay and parquetry in three tones of richly varnished wood. There are baseboards in every room and interconnecting doorways on both floors. The wall papers are all original with bordered trim at the ceiling. In the photos, two rooms appear to be painted but they are a luxurious textured paper. The curtains, with separate intricate low hanging valences, are identical throughout the house and appear to be original. There is woodwork within and paneled doors as well.
THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS...Though there are certain differences from house to house according to its size, all the Mystery Houses have in common the “Magic of Christmas”. With a sense of charm and whimsey the upper most molding at the roof's gutter line is still lightly covered with the remains of tiny, shiny, sparkling glitter that are meant to resemble frosted snow ! So in the end, with all its exciting possibilities, this Mystery House also embodies the magic of Christmas for you now…as it did for a handful of lucky girls so many years ago.
