CERTAINLY…the inaugural Lencis made in the premier era of the firm between 1920 and 1924 are among the most sought after by collectors. These are the dolls that launched the career of the gifted designer, Madame Elena di E. Scavini who, along side her husband Enrico, dazzled the doll world at the beginning of the 1920’s. These early creations are abundant in detail and character and were the most expensive doll in the marketplace at that time.
The ‘111’s that originated in this premiere era, that is the 111 Models... D-E-G-H, are the first editions of this cunning mischief-maker first made in the early years of the 20’s. They are followed by three subsequent editions of different ‘111’s…every few years up to 1930 at least. This is a cheerful almost comic doll with the side glancing eyes of a googly and a huge mop of tight little curls. The impish appeal of this child has spawned legions of collectors who specialize in a collection of this model alone.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT IS 100 YEARS.?…Those of us who have been enjoying antique dolls for a good long time can remember when Lenci Dolls were just short of still being new dolls. In the 1960’s Kimport Dolls was offering the 1940-50’s Lencis as 'old store stock' along side truly antique dolls like Rohmers and Parians. In Kimport’s thinking, at that time, the Lencis were considered an artist doll not an antique doll. Beginning with our 2020 decade the Lenci Dolls are celebrating 100 years and the ‘111’s were there from the beginning.
AN ATTIC FOUND CHARMER…This Lenci is a survivor of those 100 years. Though saved in her box, she is not ‘mint in box’. She has some even, gentle age, some dust cover and her box has had some reinforced taping especially the lid which is a little tight. She has 2 pinholes on the left side of the nose and a 3/8“ crescent shape scrape at the lower left jawline. Not unreasonable for a doll that invited such play.! There are no tears, stains or repairs and her hair is still so fresh and BIG.! One rarely sees such abundance of curls and still sporting its Original Bow along with her Original Matching Shoes - and of course the Dress. She even has another Matching Bow at the back of her dress. After all this time she still seems energetic and buoyant and so ready to play some more.!
NO LONGER OLD STORE STOCK…the Lenci Dolls have earned their place in the pantheon of great antique dolls. Madame Scavini was the equivalent of Ernestine Jumeau…each in their own workshop. In later years, Madame Alexander would follow in the same tradition of costume design.
A WONDERFUL...souvenir from those early days in Italy. This doll is still brims with the gaiety and excitement with which she first premiered 100 years ago.!
