A GREAT COMPANION…Doll house collectors appreciate these stables because they are complimentary out buildings in a doll house village or street. The colorful lithography of this piece, possibly an early Converse, goes well with Bliss lithography. In this case, we have it displayed with a lithographed Gutter House of a similar style. They look like a set.! The stable is 11” tall, 14” across the front and 6.75” deep.
THE STABLES LIKE THIS ONE…which come to a peaked roof look much like the kind of Carriage House that often accompanied a Victorian home…much like the garage did in later years. Indeed a carriage house had living accommodations for the stable boy in the loft who tended the horse and carriage before the 'Model T' moved in. The rich red brickwork and high style windows were very popular in well to do historic Victorian cities such as Saratoga Springs, New York.
Most importantly this example retains its Original Detachable Roof which is often missing from many stables.
THIS IS A WELL BUILT STRUCTURE…with barely any playwear.! It is very clean and well constructed with sound even cuts and no warping .The walls are lithographed bricks…not timber. Plus...there are two Grand Printed Windows at each side with a stonework frame and fanciful scarlet mullions. All this indicates a style more urban and less rural. The roof is etched in a way that gives it the dimensions of individual shingles. The paper on one side of the stable has darkened over time. The interior is clean with simple lines and a built in trough and 4 bays. There are 4 round windows at the back…one per bay. The center partition in the stable has been artful replaced.
INCLUDED….with the stable is a splendid well formed composition and wood cow with flocking, lots of detail and tons of character. It bears a paper label saying ‘Made in Germany’ on the tummy. There are also a pair of twin celluloid bears , one with a partial sticker; and a stalwart Celluloid Ram with plenty of attitude.! All the other dolls and animals are for display only.
