TALK ABOUT HECKLE AND JECKLE ! This mischievous pair of Katzenjammer Magpies are all Tricks and love Treats. What fun are these postwar cartoon creations that eventually entered (or snuck into) the 'Steiff Zoological Gardens’! They first appeared in 1946 as a cartoon created by Paul Terry. They did not take long after that to find popularity as Steiffs.
TWO GENERATIONS…Both these raven are very small - about 2” tall each - measured to the upper back when the beak is parallel the ground. They both have metal buttons and their yellow tags. Both fellows have round eyes and swivel heads. The earlier one is the most posable. He can sustain his beak in the pecking position, parallel position and tilted high up to the sky. The later one is much less flexible but no less engaging. Each of them is very clean. One of them picked up some stray hair from the wig of a nearby doll which has since been removed. The beaks are exceptional and are not bumped or worn in any way at the tips.
The earliest has the metal feet with slight smaller body and a longer red beak. THE TAG READS on one side: Made in Germany // Steiff Originals // 15/18 . The other side reads: 100% wool and pencil markings that look like OS.V . He has two tail feathers.
The second one is a little later with plastic feet and a bit larger at 2.25” tall. He has the chubbier rounded body with a shorter red beak. THE TAG READS on one side: Made in Germany // Original Stiff // 7430/08…the other side reads: PA 55 MA 73 // Covering 80% acrylic and 20% wool. He has three tail feathers.
These characters, always looking for fun if not trouble, will enliven your display of both dolls and animals of all kinds. They are not shy…and they do like to snack.!
