AS UNIQUE AS THE TALE ITSELF…this 13.5” one of a kind artist doll is a ‘must have’ for ‘Alice’ collectors ! It is also a 'must have' for any doll collector looking for the unusual and the unique...antique or modern... including Paper Doll collectors, Celebrity and Fairytale collectors as well. She captures all the mystery and fantasy of her character...all wrapped up in a dramatic and other worldly image of superior artistry.

A POUPÉE STATUETTE…The mounted art doll is a tradition that reaches as far back as 1870 Paris at least. A helpful friend opines that this Alice in Wonderland might be a very early Fawn Zeller creation. The mounted doll figure is a descendent of the creche figures of Neapolitan Italy...and surely other figures before that. This Alice also follows in the tradition of the bisque creation by Radiquet et Cordonnier…a fashion doll figure with immobile legs affixed to a circular base. Another more 'recent' example the "Artistic Doll" includes the art dolls of French designer Lafitte-Desirat who made her fashionably dressed costume figures with wax heads. Like those statuette dolls, this Alice is also affixed to a base. Alice is a fascinating creation of wrapped and painted fabric and paper strips. She wears a remarkable tailored paper dress still in wonderful condition.! It is supported beneath by a stiff net fabric petticoat and pantalettes. Her face is wrapped, ‘pressed’ and hand painted like many fabric dolls of both commercial and folk artists such as Kathe Kruse, Martha Chase and Emma Adams. Her hair is the original dense mohair tresses with a black paper 'Alice hairband' now augmented by ribbon.

DRINK ME….This doll starts at the beginning. True to Chapter One of the 1865 novel written by the Englishman aka Lewis Carroll, it depicts Alice on the precipice of her adventure. Once down the rabbit hole she encountered a bottle labelled ‘Drink Me’…she does, it is transformational, and so begins her fantastic journey. Here she is now - the doll - holding her miniature blown glass bottle labelled in handwritten ink... ‘Drink Me’. If only she knew what would ensue! What really followed is this very important and one of a kind Art Doll of both star quality and historic merit. She is a compelling figure speaking volumes without saying a word !

While the bottle says to her ‘DRIINK ME’ she now says to you - ‘BUY ME’…and join her in a life filled with fantasy and adventure.!!

MARKS: none

CONDITION: very well preserved. Apparently unplayed condition with very little aging. The paper dress is elaborately pleated with no tearing or foxing. Her organdy pinafore is near mint with satin trim. The fabric underpinning are still stiff and supportive. The perfect ways length hair has some light dusting but in the completely original uncut set. The black paper hairband is augmented with black ribbon. The two dark rows at the hemline are not stains but are remarkable paper on paper decorative bands.
