WHEN SIZE MATTERS…Who doesn’t love a Kewpie - especially one this easy to see ? Standing 10.5” tall to the tip of the top knot it is quite an impressive work of porcelain. And she seems larger than she measures ! Made of a quality easily attributable to Kestner her glorious bisque contributes to the playful energy she radiates. Obviously early in the mold, her crisp features are clear and bright conveying all the animation one hopes for in a Kewpie.
LITTLE DIFFERENCES…all add up! Of special interest is the articulated dark hair of this Kewpie with the multi-stroked forelock that bisects the forehead. Most Kewpie have a faint sandy hair coloration stemming from the top knot and very little modeling. It does little to contribute to the personality. In this case, however, the hair becomes a prominent aspect of her facial expression. Rich dark and wide ,with multiple brush marks, it descends just a 1/4” short of the eyebrows.! The dark prominence of this hair accentuates the prettiness of her complexion while adding dimension . Over the ears ,what is normally an indistinct sandy tuft of baby hair is, on this model, a fully articulated cluster of molded tight ringlets that hang way out over the ears….further accented by bold brush marks. The little bun at the back of her head is no less surprising. It is a bun of well delineated ringlets and hatch marks which is also highlighted by pronounced brush stroking.
Also, her head is cocked to one side. It looks a bit downward and to the right as well. It makes her seem more like a socket head doll and it really animates her. It allows her to easily fit in with non-Kewpie dolls. This aspect, along with her extra big side glancing eyes, gives her whole body a special liveliness absent in many Kewpie. She is certainly attention getting .
AS IF NOT ENOUGH…this splendid & scarce large example is also wearing her period manufactured ensemble. It is a marvelous miniature floral print frock with literally 'buttons and bows' and a broad brimmed bonnet to match... a real Sun Bonnet Baby.! These Factory Garments are expertly constructed with tapered bodice and pleated skirt….ever so pretty.! Act quickly!!
