PART KEWPIE - PART SPRITE…This little creature is magically adorable. A little slip of a thing sitting just under 2“ high, she is made of fine quality bisque and ever so carefully modeled. A lot of detail went into her pixie like expression with lidded Side Glancing Round Eyes with bright pupils…tiny nose dots and a Heart Shaped Mouth. Her hair is gathered up into a molded Top Knot reminiscent of Kewpie, as is her seated body position. Though it is otherwise signed, it is very much like the seated Action Kewpies with outstretched legs and the other arm out to the side and turned up at the wrist. Like the seated Kewpies she is also accessorized. Our little Nymphette is looking studiously into her ‘reflection’ of her hand painted silver mirror. How small and young to be so preoccupied with her appearance.! Perhaps she is playing 'dress up’ in the attic! As likely, it is her first haircut…or maybe a new hairdo.! Possibly she had her hair combed up for the first time…just like mommy!
"MOMMY, WHO MADE ME ?"…Obviously a German bisque ca 1912 it is a signed piece. A friend and colleague of ours, Penny Hadfield, who is an expert in the world of miniatures, all bisques and novelties has several of these marked 'Goebel' and several that are not. This one is incised: AK. // 601. Quite a lot of markings for such a tiny piece ! It covers almost the whole 'bottom' underside of the figure. She falls into a select category of her era's sweet natured 'Lolitas' along the lines of 'September Morn', 'Tiss Me' etc. Large Kewpie collections will always have a few of these Faerie like creatures because they are irresistible and so compatible.
Whether you want her as an All Bisque, a Kewpie, a Naughty or Doll House Doll for the bathroom or nursery, she will fit in nicely, brighten the scene and lend an aura of innocence, whimsy and charm!
MARKS: incised AK. // 601.
