Here we have an entirely handmade pair of antique solid sterling silver candlesticks hallmarked to 1900.
These astonishing candlesticks are completely made using the time consuming repousse technique. Every detail you see here the floriate patterns, the detail to the borders and the elegant leaf like details represent hours and hours of skilled hand work.
These hallmarked antiques are signed by the maker on each candlestick for Robert Pringle London and have London assay office marks with the date letter for the 1900 - 1901 year.
An unusual aspect of these is the square profile rarely seen for candlesticks of the period which are typically round. It makes them so much more the rare!
These candlesticks weigh 729 grams approximately. They are not weighted inside with lead like modern sterling silver candlesticks often are rather the weight here is just the weight of the fine sterling silver.
Each candlestick measures 3 3/8" square at the base by 7 1/4" tall approximately. The top measures approximately 1 7/8" square (86mm x 86mm x 184mm, 47mm).
Underneath we can see original red velvet to each base.
They are in beautiful condition commensurate with their age and authenticity there is significant patina to the silver. This picking out the details and curvature, each base has more significant scratches which could be polished out professionally with ease if so desired. One candlestick sounds like there is something light inside it when you shake it gently not present with the other it is a light barely audible sound and feel. The patina to me is a lovely element of the pair showing their age and their use. They are handmade and as such small differences and nuances exist between the pair the subtle differences are beautiful indeed. If you would like the bases polished more or have a request similar please let us know. These are an exceptional pair of period candlesticks that could grace the interior of any residence.
Like all luxury items these candlesticks feel beautiful to handle. When you pick one up the weight and shape feels pleasing in your hand.
In different lighting conditions the contrast between the repousse details and the polished curves of plain silver catch the light beautifully and flood the room with romance and charm. There is a beautiful warmth about the pair a mystery and a happiness about them that is a little hard to describe in photos.
