This Mt. Pleasant Double-handled Squared Black Amethyst Glass 8-inch Salad Bowl by LE Smith has such a creative and intriguing shape! This bowl has four triple scallops that rise above the rim, one on each side of the handles. The centers of the two sides without handles each have two smaller peaks. The two scalloped handles are applied to the outside, and each handle has a design of four incised S-scrolls. The Mt. Pleasant pattern is nicknamed “Double Shield,” and the elongated double shield is on each of the four sides of the bowl. L.E. Smith’s black amethyst glass is so opaque that it is highly reflective, causing every speck of dust to be magnified in the photos. The purple in the glass is visible when a bright light is shone through the base of the handles.
Made by L.E. Smith from the 1920s to 1934, there is no mark.
This lovely bowl measures 8-inches across each side, 8-3/4 inches across the handles, and 3-3/4 inches tall at its highest points. The circular foot is 5-inches in diameter.
There are the usual expected surface scratches, typical of decades-old Depression Era glass, along with some pitting and wear in the bottom of the bowl. There are no chips or cracks. Other than any minor flaws characteristic of Depression Era Glass, such as bubbles, mold seam roughness, or other irregularities, there is no other damage.
