This pretty little antique Blue Porcelain Collar Button Box is Hand Painted with Forget-Me-Nots and dates to a time that well-dressed men wore buttons and studs to attach their shirt collars, and the box is sweetly shaped to reflect its purpose. Today it is perfect for tiny treasures such as pins, buttons, earrings, beads, or any number of other small pieces. Marked RS Germany, it is covered in the most delicate of pale blue glazes. The collar, front button, and top knob handle are all drenched in gold. The top is hand decorated with a circling vine of blue forget-me-nots accented with green leaves and pink highlights, to add style to the dressing room of the era.
There is a semi-circular flaw at the top to the left of the collar. There is less shine to the glaze there, and you can feel a slight ridge. There is no sign of this on the other side, so it is undoubtedly a manufacturing flaw. There are several places near the bottom where the glaze is uneven and white shows through. The gold shows the patina of age. There are no chips or cracks.
This little treasure box measures 2-5/8 inches in diameter and 1-1/4 inches tall at the highest point near the front of the collar. The knob on the top of the cover extends another 1/2-inch.
Made by Reinhold Schlegelmilch, (R.S.) Germany, circa the early 1900s, it is marked "RS" within a laurel wreath topped with a star. "Germany" at the bottom completes the mark.
