This is a wonderful Imari Colored Gaudy Welsh type Biscuit Jar made by Arthur Wood & Sons, England. Number 1015 10, and embossed Octagon 24 England, the bright Imari colors of cobalt blue and orange-red form a Gaudy Welsh inspired motif in an all-over design on this octagon biscuit jar. The decoration is lavishly enhanced with a gold overlay. The original twig and woven wicker handle is attached to the two knobs on opposite sides.
This cookie or biscuit jar measures 5-1/2 inches tall, 6-1/2 with the cover. The handle adds 3-inches when straight up. It is 7-inches in diameter, and each panel is 2-1/2 inches wide. The circular foot and the opening are each about 4-inches in diameter.
The blue-green globe mark with the narrow Arthur Wood banner across is stamped on the back, though the mark is well-worn and not easy to read. The pattern number 1015 10 is handwritten in red, and there is a deep blue “J” artist’s mark. The words “Octagon 24 England” are also embossed on the bottom.
Made by Arthur Wood & Sons circa 1934, the jar does have non-discolored crazing typical of vintage earthenware, and there is some wear both to the paint and the gold. There are some inclusions on the inside bottom as well. There are no chips.
