Two bright red apples dominate the center of this intaglio Goofus Glass pattern. Indented beneath the surface of the glass in intricate detail, the apples are set off by abundant leaves, and the rim of the glass plate is an intricate design of scrolls, flowers, and latticework.

It is very unusual to find a plate in this condition. Goofus Glass was cold painted, and therefore often flaked right off. In fact, some housewives of the time removed the color entirely from this inexpensive glassware, leaving only the plain glass. Some of the gold has flaked, but for the most part is still intact and lovely. There are a few scratches on the surface of the plate.

This glass plate measures 8-1/2 inches in diameter, and there is no mark.

Goofus Glass was made by many different glass companies during the early 1900s and few records exist today regarding its production. The intaglio designs were produced for only a few short years before the better quality Carnival Glass was introduced in 1908.
