Offered here is a vintage Elgin American Lite-O-Matic Gold Ladies' Combined Lighter and Cigarette Case. This elegant metal cigarette lighter and case is a brushed gold color. The front of the brushed gold case has a 1-3/4 inch panel of shiny, scrolling florals down the middle. A rectangle at the base of the panel has been engraved "C.A.C." The back is plain brushed gold, and the interior has a shiny swirled pattern.
The cover flicks open with a push-button mechanism to reveal a thin, spring-loaded L-shaped bar that holds the cigarettes in place. When the case is clicked closed, the clever mechanism flips the lighter open automatically. There is a tiny sliding "lock," presumably as a safety feature so that the lady would not accidentally set her purse on fire!
This intiriquing and beautiful cigarette holder measures 5-inches long by 3-3/8 inches wide by 3/8-inches thick.
The U.S Patent application was filed on April 11, 1947 and the patent was assigned to the Illinois Watch Case Company on Oct. 5, 1948.
It is marked inside on the narrow bars of the holder “Pat. D-151271, Elgin American, Made in USA, Magic Action Lite-o-Matic."
There are minor surface scratches, and there is a dent in the top corner of the lighter. There is a spot of wear on the inside of the cover. The lighter has not been tested to see if it will light, but the mechanisms are in working order.
