This pretty Plantation Colonial ashtray was made by Mason's, England for Carl Forslund of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Plantation Colonial pattern, also known as Regency Plantation Colonial, number C4475, features a large poppy in shades of medium to cobalt blue accented with green leaves in the center of this ashtray. Smaller blossoms in russet red, yellow, and the same blues, dance around the rim on vines with leaves of blue or green. The rim has a narrow band of cobalt blue scrolls.
Carl Forslund owned a furniture store and a mail order catalog company in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1933 into the early 1990s. Mason's made ironstone pieces for Carl Forslund sometime between 1933 and the 1960s. The backstamp, in indigo blue, is the Mason's crown mark and tablecloth banner with "Patent Ironstone" inside. The words "Plantation Colonial Made in England by Mason's" are above the crown, with the words for Carl Forslund Grand Rapids Michigan" below. There is also a red "W" on the back.
The square ashtray measures 3-1/2 inches on each side, 4-1/4 across the diagonal.
On close examination, you can find the beginnings of non-discolored crazing on the back, but there is no other damage to this ashtray.
