This stirring Monochromatic Blue Commemorative Peace Plate was designed by Gotfred Rode and issued in 1918 by Royal Copenhagen in commemoration of the end of World War I. The plate depicts a serene daybreak scene of a mother and son watching the sunrise over the water. The rim of the plate bears the Danish inscription: "FOR ANDEN GANG JORD AF HAVET GRØN OG HERLIG SER OPSTIGE" from Voluspa, the Wise Woman's Prophecy, of the Poetic Edda. This poem of Norse Mythology dates to the 10th Century, and the translation of this quote is "For The Second Time The Earth Emerges From The Sea Green And Wonderful."
This commemorative plate measures 9 inches in diameter.
Made by Royal Copenhagen in 1918, this plate is number 196 of 3488 copies issued. The backstamp is a green crown circled by the words "Royal Copenhagen," and a water sign of three lines in blue with the number 196. The plate has two holes in the foot for hanging.
There are several tiny glaze pops in the high gloss glaze, as well as a few inclusions that look like grains of sand. Aside from these manufacturing flaws, the plate is in very good condition.
