California Pottery S-Quire Ceramics by Zaida - Lady in Black Gown
This Lady in Black by Zaida was made by S-Quire Ceramics, California, sometime between 1943 and 1950 when the company was in operation.
Don't you just love the exquisite detail in fine vintage California pottery? This young lady wears an off the shoulder, full-skirted black gown dotted with pink and white flowers with green leaves and accented with a matching green ribbon at the waist. The bodice and hem are trimmed in the same shade of green, and she wears a painted choker of green beads at her neck. This stunning blonde has three applied pink roses in her fashionable hair and carries a matching bouquet, framed with a circle of ceramic lace.
She measures 6-1/2 inches by 5-1/2 inches at the widest points of her skirt, and she is 9-inches tall.
She is marked with a hand printed "S-Quire Ceramics California, Figurine by Zaida," in black lettering. The number 114 is also in black, and A/A is incised in the bottom.
As is the case with many ladies of her age, this little lady is not without damage. Her bouquet has a sizable chip off the top of the lace, and her right shoulder has lost a bit of the glaze, giving her a 3/8-inch scar. She also has crazing, but no discoloration. She is still a fine quality display piece.
