This stunning large No. 832 Petal 8-inch 3-footed Black Amethyst Glass Bowl made by Lancaster is a hard-to-find treasure! The striking black amethyst glass is the decoration in itself, but the outstanding Lancaster quality incorporates a scalloped edge with six points. The sloped sides are supported by three scrolled toes framed by Lancaster’s signature long, pointed petal shape within the mold. The glass itself is such an opaque black that the purple amethyst color is seen only with a bright light shining behind it.
There are several surface scratches from normal use. These do not show up well unless under direct light. There is also a bubble or two (also black) from the manufacturing process. There are no chips or cracks.
This beautiful bowl measures 8-inches in diameter and 3-7/8 inches tall. The three toes raise it up about an inch from the table.
Made by the Lancaster Glass Company of Lancaster, Ohio, between 1930 to 1933, this bowl is technically Depression Glass, but Lancaster's glass was of much finer quality than typical Depression Glass. There is no mark.
Lancaster was one of the pioneer companies to produce fine black glass, as early as 1908.
