This Primula Cup and Saucer from Carlton Ware features a pretty pale yellow background with an embossed leaf motif. In addition to the leaf design, the cup is decorated with a pair of raised red and yellow primrose blossoms on a painted green leaf background. The handle has a matching shaped and painted primrose. The saucer features only the moulded leaf design encircling the cup ring. This pretty pattern is known as "Primula." The yellow porcelain cup measures 3 inches in diameter and 2-3/4 inches deep. The saucer is 5 inches in diameter. The backstamp bears the black script "Carlton Ware" followed by "Made in England, Trademark, Registered, Australian Design, Registration Applied For." This mark was used by Carlton Ware between 1935 and 1961, and the incised number that appears to be "1638" narrows the date to 1938 or 1939. It is in good condition with non-discolored crazing.
