This Van Briggle Art Pottery figurine of a Native American Kneeling Woman Holding a Baby in a Cradleboard is becoming difficult to find. Beautifully finished in the beloved Turquoise Ming Blue that is readily recognizable as Van Briggle, this serene Native American woman wears a wrap around her shoulders with the signature darker blue glaze sprayed over the turquoise. More of the blue lightly touches the lower back of her gown. She holds the baby, swaddled in a cradleboard, across her knees. A truly lovely figurine, the satin matte glaze has the smoothness and patina of many a loving touch.
She is 8-inches tall and approximately 5-1/2 inches front to back. The base is 4-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches.
The hand incised mark reads “Van Briggle Colo Spgs” The etcher’s mark “HVM” and the Double-A mark are also hand incised on the bottom.
Made by Van Briggle circa the late 1980s to 1990s, the HVM mark identifies the Etcher as Hilde Manuszak who was with Van Briggle Pottery from 1988 to 2002.
This lovely maiden may need a little cleaning in the nooks and crannies. There are no chips or cracks.
