Here is a fun Set of Five "Tickled Pink" California Pottery 10-Inch Dinner Plates by Vernon Kilns. Decorated with an abstract geometric pattern of pink rectangles overlaid with pink, gray, and black lines, both the colors and the pattern are classic 1950s. Each plate is entirely covered with a sprinkling of tiny freckles to complete the pattern.
These are vintage pottery plates, and they are not perfect. All have surface scratches, which are somewhat obscured by the pattern. These were stored in newspaper for years, and though I have wiped them clean, a good soak should remove any traces of gray newsprint. One plate has a 1/8-inch shallow, smooth nick along the edge. There are no chips or cracks in any of the other four plates.
Each coupe-shaped plate measures 10-inches in diameter.
Made by Vernon between 1958 and 1965, there are two different backstamps on these plates. Both are in gray. One, used in the 1950s, is a stylized coffeepot that morphs into the words “Vernon Ware, California-USA, Tickled Pink, Dishwasher and Ovenproof.” The other, newer, mark is an oval that seems to grow from the large “V” of Vernonware, and encloses the words “USA California, Vernonware, “Tickled®Pink” dishwasher and ovenproof.”
