Farber Brothers produced the chrome holders for these beautiful Cambridge Glass Amethyst Salt and Pepper Shaker inserts. Cambridge’s amethyst color is a clear, deep purple with lots of shine. The glass shakers from the Cambridge 3400 Line, are tipped slightly in the holders so that the little glass handle is more to the top. The chrome holders, known as Krome-Kraft, have the familiar Farber Bros. openwork design. These holders were patented to be interchangeable, so that glass inserts could be replaced. However, I did not attempt to separate these.
The amethyst color was first introduced by Cambridge in 1931 and Farber Brothers produced the chrome for this set until about 1949. The glass is not marked, but the Farber Brothers Chrome holders both have the Farber Bros triple hallmark followed by “New York, NY Pat No. 87496 1924-011.” The ball-shaped shakers are approximately 2-inches in diameter and the handles and tops make them about 2-3/4 inches tall. The metal base is 1-1/4 inches in diameter.
The glass shakers show only minor surface scratches, but the holder of one shaker has corroded and the chrome tops show wear and small dents. The chrome holder of the other shaker is still shiny with only minimal signs of age. Both will need cleaning.
