The Hull Pottery Little Red Riding Hood Butter Dish is becoming nearly impossible to find! This Little Red Riding Hood has blue eyes, dainty round pink cheeks, and blond hair peeking out from under her famous red hood. Her cape is tied with a gold bow, and her dress is decorated with blue lines on the bodice. The hem of her skirt is textured to look like three layers of ruffles, all decorated with blue edging. These blend with the rim of the bottom with is also ruffled and edged with blue. The front of her skirt is decorated with a large, fully open, orange-red poppy decal accented with purple flowers, white daisies, a poppy bud, and green leaves. Her yellow and brown closed, cross-hatch basket is looped over her left arm while her other arm rests at her side.
This butter dish and cover measures just over 6-inches tall with the cover on. The bottom is 6-7/8 inches long by 4-3/4 inches wide, and the top is 6-1/4 inches by 4-1/2 inches.
Little Red Riding Hood was one of Hull's most popular lines, patented by Louise Bauer in 1943 and continued in production until around 1957. Though most of the decorating work was done by Regal China, the line continues to be known as Hull Pottery.
The impressed mark “Pat. Des. NO.135889” is on the underside of the bottom. The top is not marked.
The top has a 1/4-inch by 3/8-inch edge chip on the left side near the front corner of her skirt and a tiny nick in the blue on the back. There is also a 1/4-inch hairline on the underside of the top that does not go through. The bottom has a 1/4-inch chip on the raised ridge that holds the cover in place and is hidden by the cover. There is a 3/4-inch line of stray blue paint on the underside of the bottom. There are some pinpoint glaze pops in the hood, and the red is somewhat inconsistent in color. This is normal, as the red color was very difficult to achieve. Any wear to the gold or in the decals is no more than minimally expected.
