Add a delightful touch of whimsy to your kitchen with this Anthropomorphic smiling Relish Jar by DeForest of California Pottery! Made to resemble a juicy hamburger in the bun, the jar is glazed in browns shading to cream coloring. The adorable face is depicted with DeForest’s signature white eyes with black irises and long, black, painted-on eyelashes. The little snub-nose is in the mold, above an incised smiling mouth that connects to round, rosy cheeks. The hamburger patty resembles the hair, and the molded and painted, green relish spills out between the eyes and in two other places around the jar. The top of the bun forms the cover and a clever kind of Tam-o'-Shanter hat, with a green olive handle and the word “Relish” painted across the front of the cover.
This fun covered dish is 2-1/8 inches tall without the cover and approximately 4-inches to the top of the green knob handle. The jar is 4-3/4 inches in diameter, and the opening is 4-inches in diameter with a slot for the spoon.
It is signed by hand, in brown "DeForest of California, Hand Painted." There is also an incised “’56” followed by the copyright © symbol on the lower back of the dish.
Made by Deforest Pottery circa 1956, there is a nearly imperceptible hairline crack that goes from top to bottom where the right eye is. While it is visible on the inside, especially under black light, it is only visible on the outside above the eye. The cover has five small, shallow nicks or “flea bites” along the edge. The largest of these is 1/8-inch long. The inside of the jar has darkened with age. The smudges seen on the top in the photos are sticker residue that has been removed.
