This lucky find is Mason’s England Java pattern in an Ironstone Bud Vase and Underplate decorated with 22Karat Gold. The printed Asian-style design of winding wine-red poppies on deep teal stems and leaves is made stunning by the hand decorated 22Karat gold lining. The floral design wraps around the vase making each side unique. The design is repeated on the plate with an added red and teal border with gold flourishes. The rim of both the plate and the vase are also gold trimmed. The Java pattern in this high-quality ironstone is not easily found.
The slightly bulbous vase is 4-3/4 inches tall. It is 2-1/8 inches across at its widest, narrowing to just an inch across the top. The foot is 1-1/2 inches per side. The matching underplate is 4-1/4 inches in diameter.
It is stamped with the red transfer printed angular Crown and Banner mark. "Mason's" arches over the crown in block letters. "Ironstone Made in England“ is printed in the banner, with "Java ©" in script below followed by "Printed and Hand Painted." There are also artist's marks around the backstamp. This mark was used by Mason's circa 1964 to 1967.
There are no condition issues. In the photos, the dark smudge seen at the bottom of the vase, as well as the dark line at the top, were from sticker residue that has been removed, as has the remnant on the back of the underplate.
