Offered for your consideration is this American Bisque Sad Clown Cookie Jar. Made by American Bisque for Cardinal, this anthropomorphic Sad Clown cookie jar is shaped as the head of an adorable crying clown. The molded facial features are cold painted in vivid colors. His arched eyebrows, squinched eyes, and a single large tear beneath each eye are all painted in coal black. A sky blue vertical line accents each eye, and his nose is painted with a bright red teardrop shape to match his wide, red, downturned mouth. His black hair is impressed with realistic waves at the back and a pair of tufts of molded hair wing out to the sides above his ears creating handles. His pointed hat forms the cover, with the turned-up brim shaded black, and “I Want Some Cookies,” the reason for his tears, stamped on the front of the cone shape peak.
Measuring approximately 8-3/4 inches tall with the cover by 7-1/4 inches wide by 8-inches front to back, there is room for plenty of cookies inside. The jar is 6-inches tall without the cover and the opening is 4-1/2 inches in diameter.
Made by American Bisque circa the 1950s, the only mark is the words ©Cardinal USA impressed into the lower back, though it is difficult to read.
The colors are clear and bright. There is heavy crazing, some of it discolored on the bottom. There are a few stains on the inside. The words on the top are somewhat smeared, and other than the normal imperfections of processing, there is no other damage to this wonderful piece.
