Here for your consideration is this amusing anthropomorphic Frowning Onion Cream and Sugar set Made in Japan. On a white ground with blush-pink shading, a blue-eyed scowling face decorates the front of both the onion-shaped creamer and sugar bowl. The pink blush is more pronounced and darker on the creamer. The handles are done in celery green with slight ribbing to resemble the stem and leaves of the onion. The cover of the sugar comes to a knot of green sprouts at the top.
The sturdy creamer is 3-inches tall and 3-inches in diameter at its widest. It is 4-1/8 inches across the handle and spout and stands on a 2-1/4 inch diameter foot.
The matching sugar is 4-inches tall to the top of the cover, 2-1/2 inches tall to the rim of the bowl. It is 2-1/4 inches in diameter across the rim and 3-inches at its widest. It is 4-1/4 inches across the handles and has a 2-inch diameter foot.
Made in Japan circa the 1950s, there is no mark, but the matching teapot has a blue and white rectangular “Japan” sticker attached to the bottom.
There is roughness on the edge of the cover of the sugar bowl, including a 1/8-inch shallow edge chip on the underside that is barely noticeable from the top. There are also two shallow edge chips on the foot of the sugar, one is 1/4-inch long and the other is 3/16-inch. Other than non-discolored crazing on both pieces, there are no other obvious condition issues.
The matching teapot, as well as the matching Garlic salt shaker, are also offered in my shop.
