This wonderful Mid-Century red and white striped Cocktail Party Set Designed by Yona for Shafford, Japan, is named Country Club. The 3-Piece set includes a Martini Pitcher, a dish for serving Olives, Onions, and toothpicks, and a matching dish for serving Nuts. The bright red and white stripes set a fun picnic atmosphere, or even a circus feeling, and will be great at your next cocktail party! The kitschy red stripes fluctuate with the shape of the piece, and each piece is clearly labeled in black script.
Country Club was designed by Yona Ceramics for Shafford, Japan during the 1950s.
The red stripes on the hard-to-find Martini pitcher average about 3/4-inches in width. The word “Martini” is written in black script, with a black ribbon flourish above and below making the label stand out. The red and white plastic-covered wire handle is attached to the 3/4-inch button knob at each side. It is stamped in black “Country Club Designed by Yona 8743Y.” The red and gold Shafford Shield foil label is intact, though wrinkled, and reads “Styled By Shafford.”
The red stripes on the three-section garnish dish average about 3/8-inches in width. The words “Olives, Picks,” and “Onions” are written in black script, with a black ribbon flourish above and below. It is stamped in black “Country Club Designed by Yona 8748Y.” The red and gold Shafford Shield foil label is intact, though wrinkled, and reads “Styled By Shafford.”
The red stripes on the "Nuts" bowl average about 3/8-inches in width. The word “Nuts” is written in black script, with a black line flourish below and as an extended cross to the “t.” It is mismarked with ©1957 inside a gold circle, followed by “Yona Highball.” The “7” and the word Highball are smeared and difficult to read, and this is clearly not a highball! The red and silver Shafford Shield foil label is intact and reads “Styled By Shafford.”
The tall, narrow Martini pitcher measures just over 9-inches tall at the pouring lip and 8-inches at the back. It stands on a 2-5/8 inch diameter foot.
The one-piece garnish dish is a great find! It is 8-inches long and 3-1/4 inches tall at the top of the “Picks” section. Each of the “Olives” and “Onions” sections is 3-1/4 inches in diameter, and the “Picks” holder is 2-1/2 inches in diameter. The center opening meant for the toothpicks is 1-inch in diameter and 1-1/2 inches deep, about the right size to accommodate a candle taper.
Shaped like a small bucket, the Nut bowl is 3-1/8 inches tall and 4-inches in diameter at the rim and 3-1/4 inches at the base.
These are vintage pottery pieces and may have additional minor flaws that do not detract. The colors are bright with minimal wear. There is a small, old 1-mm nick under the red paint at the rim of the pitcher. There is some staining on the lip, and it needs careful cleaning inside. There is crazing on the garnish dish. Most of it is non-discolored, but there is some light discoloration in the bottom of the sections. The remnants of two paper labels are on the backs of the olives and onions sections. Unfortunately, the "Nuts" dish shows the most damage. There is non-discolored crazing, and the knobs for the handle are broken off, but the hole does not go through. The handle is missing.
To preserve the finish, be sure to wash these pieces by hand.
