What a delightful find! This "Baby Carmen" California Pottery Girl Vase was made by Kim Ward during the 1940's. Baby Carmen is a young lady who wears a yellow-green scarf with white polka dots over her head. Her apron and the cuffs of her dress match the headscarf. She carries a large white vase, with an applied white flower on each side near her hands.
This collectible California pottery vase measures 6 inches by 4-1/2 inches at the base, and 8-3/4 inches tall.
She is generously marked "52 Kim Ward Hollywood Hand Decorated" in scrolling black print with "Baby Carmen" added in red script. Kim Ward was the name of the pottery started by Peter Schuefftan, former husband of Kay McHugh "Kaye of Hollywood." The couple were former associates of the famous Hedi Schoop before all three went their separate ways to head their own California potteries. Their designs were very similar.
There are a couple of small chips on the applied flower petals, and one spot like a burn mark near the hem of her skirt. Baby Carmen will be a charming addition to your collection of vintage California Pottery! Thank you for visiting MaggieBelle's! Please email me anytime!
