A little more obscure, but strikingly beautiful, this Regent #4864 Cobalt Bone China Teacup and Saucer by Samuel Radford, England. The detailed cobalt blue and gold design features fancy medallions framing a multi-floral bouquet in the center of each. Each floral center is outlined in gold flourishes and scrolls that extend onto the 1/2-inch cobalt blue border that surrounds it. Each blue medallion is in turn outlined in gold flourishes. The cream background has been given an overlay of gold latticework, scrolls, and fringe with smaller embellishments between each cobalt medallion. The outside and center bottom of the cup and the cup well of the saucer have been left snow-white in contrast. The inside of the cup is decorated with three of the medallions, while the saucer is decorated with four. The rims of both pieces and the foot and handle of the cup are all gold-lined and another narrow band of gold circles the outside of the cup.
The teacup measures 2-1/4 inches tall and 4-1/4 inches in diameter across the slightly flared rim, with another inch for the high, unusual circle handle. It stands on a 1-7/8 inch diameter foot. The matching saucer is 5-1/2 inches in diameter.
Both pieces are stamped with the Samuel Radford Crown and SR Monogram mark with the pattern name, Regent, above, and the words “Bone China, Fenton, Made in England.” This mark was used by Radford's circa 1928 into the 1930s. (Samuel Radford’s moved from Longton to Fenton in 1884.) The pattern number 4864 is written by hand on both the cup and the saucer.
There is a small 1/8-inch rough spot along the edge of the saucer that is easier felt than seen. The gold along the edge is unaffected by it. There appears to be consistent wear in the gold on the blue sections of the teacup, but this is regularly on the blue and nowhere else indicating that it may be a defect that occurred during the decorating process. The teacup pings beautifully, and other than normal wear on the foot, there are no other condition issues.
