This beautiful Lefton vintage Red Haired Lady Head Vase and Wall Pocket in her Green Winter Cape is named Ginger. You will fall in love with Ginger at first sight! She is dressed for winter in a wide-brimmed bonnet and matching cape of sage green trimmed with a generous band of white around the brim of her hat, the shoulders of her cape, and tied at the neck around her collar. An applied five-petaled yellow flower with attached green leaves serves as the closure at her throat. The green of her clothing perfectly complements her red hair which is set in large, barrel curls at her forehead and around the back of her head. She has oversized applied eyelashes that are individually defined at different lengths, and cupid’s bow lips in deep pink. She is finished in a high gloss glaze, with a pre-drilled hole and flat space at the back of her head for hanging.
This distinctive Ginger head vase and wall pocket measures 6-inches tall to the top of her hat and 5-1/4 inches to the rim at the back. The opening is approximately 2-inches in diameter. She rests on a 4-1/4 by 2-1/4 inch oval base.
Made by Lefton China between the late 1940s to early 1950s, the bottom reads “Ginger” in script. The original paper label is gone, but I have seen a matching Ginger with the large red and gold label that reads “Lefton’s Exclusives Japan.” This label was used from 1946-1953.
There are long non-discolored crazing lines all over the high gloss piece, and the flower at her neck has a petal broken off. She has a few pinpoint extra flecks of color under the glaze on her face, and a couple of small spots of dried paint on the back where she once hung against a wall. There is sticker residue on the bottom. There is no other damage to this wonderful piece.
Ginger was clearly patterned after the famed Betty Lou Nichols’ style of large ceramic barrel curls and oversized eyelashes of the 1940s.I'm so happy you stopped into Maggie Belle's Memories! Please Like us on Facebook for updates and fun information!
