This Anthropomorphic French Chef Relish dish was made by American Bisque, West Virginia. Known as the French Chef, this jar in the shape of the head of a round-cheeked man with an upturned pencil mustache seems more like an artist than a chef with his blue beret cover! The jar is glazed in peach with deep pink cheeks, blue eyes, and black hair. The enchanting face has sleepy-lidded eyes with a thick swash of eyelashes. The nose is in the mold, and a smiling pink mouth is painted beneath the mustache. His wavy black hair is textured and tufts out at the temples. The dish and the cover are both slotted for a spoon. The cover of the jar is a beret-style hat in pastel blue, with the word “Relish” painted across the front of the cover.
This fun little jar measures about 5-1/2 inches tall with the cover on, 3-5/8 inches without the lid. He measures about 4-1/4 inches across his round cheeks, and 4-1/4 inches front to back. The circular, flat foot is 2-1/2 inches in diameter. The opening is 2-1/2 inches in diameter with a slot for the spoon in both the bowl and in the cover.
Made by American Bisque circa the 1960s, the flat bottom is stamped 1643, and there is no other mark.
There is a small amount of non-discolored crazing, visible under bright light. Though he may need a little cleaning, there are no chips or cracks, and the colors are still clear and bright.
