An absolutely stunning 1850s Cobalt Blue and luxurious gold antique dinner plate by W.T. Copeland, Spode Works, England meant for glorious display. Surrounding a Rose Floral Center, the two-inch wide, scalloped rim of the plate is first decorated with a rich, cobalt blue. Elaborate, scrolling gold florals overlay the blue and dance around the gilded rim. Both the blue and the gold trim drape down into the white center of the plate forming a beautiful, scalloped effect around the center. Six curled shell-shapes are carefully placed to appear to hold the cobalt drape away from the center. The center of the plate has a realistic large, pink rose accented with greenery, a deep pink bud, and red rose-hips.
This gorgeous plate measures 9-1/4 inches in diameter.
It is stamped in green with the elaborate scrolling Copeland mark best described as two of the letter C intersected back to back. This mark was used by W.T. Copeland on their finest pieces from 1851 to 1885. There is also an English Registry Mark in green that indicates registration of this design in May of 1852. The pattern number 9528R is handwritten in red on the back of the plate.
The gold around the edge has places of wear where the blue shows through. There are also places where the cobalt blue is less deep than others. The edge of the plate also feels less polished than the main part of the plate. All of these may be a result of the hand-painted manufacturing process. There are no other condition issues.
