Here are a pair of adorable California Pottery Mr. and Mrs. Skunk Flower Holders from DeLee Art! Finished in a high-gloss black glaze and clearly appalled by their own scent, these adorable skunks wear matching facial expressions of eyes rolled upwards and mouths showing pink under their pink noses. Obviously a matched pair made from the same mold, Mrs. Skunk wears blue mittens to match her blue-trimmed white hat. Both have a fringe of glazed white bangs over the forehead, that extends over the head and down the back and the tail, as is the fashion of skunks. Mrs. Skunk’s wide-brimmed, white picture hat is trimmed with wide blue scallops and an extruded clay spaghetti decoration, unusual for DeLee, on top. Mr. Skunk wears a jaunty bowler hat in matching blue.
Each figurine stands nearly 6-inches tall, on a base that measures about 2-3/4 inches by 2-3/4 inches. Mrs. Skunk’s hat makes her about 3-3/4 inches wide and 4-inches deep. Mr. Skunk is also about 4-inches deep, and the flower opening on each is small - only about 1-inch by 1-1/4 inches.
Each has the original DeLee Art black on silver circular foil sticker. In artistically geometric style, it reads: “deLee Art, California, Hand Decorated.” Mrs. Skunk also has a faint incised mark, partially hidden under the foil label, that appears to read “deLee, Hand Painted” followed by a © copyright symbol. There is no incised mark on Mr. Skunk. Each still has the silver foil "Mrs. Skunk" and "Mr. Skunk" identifying labels on their tummies.
These darling, odor-free skunks were made by DeLee sometime from the 1940s to 1952.
As is common in this type of decoration, some of the extruded clay “spaghetti” on top of Mrs. Skunk’s hat has broken off, and both show crazing with minor discoloration in the white sections. There are no other condition issues.
